This was weird.....surreal even. What was going on?

sorry for your troubles
soon after moving here and 'before chickens', a little male racoon found his way to my horses dinner table. he was no trouble and was fun to watch.
I soon found myself making up meals for him and placing them in 'his' dish at our woods edge. wasn't long before the little man had a family of his own, his meals were not enough for four so he and his family visited our back porch to supplement their meal with our cats food. By now we had chickens and it wasn't long before dh was called from a warm bed to kill the chick eating varmint i had been unable to feed due to my recouping from surgery! They were never a threat and he seemed proud to show off his family, as long as his meals were provided. No meals? Chickens will do nicely! While i thought it wonderful to share i'm very ashamed for my actions....took us months to run them off and cost 3 hens lives! i miss them but won't do it again

Update: He has not been back during the day. Like I said, we sit outside every evening to watch. We are ready if he does. We pick up the feed pans each night, always have. There are signs that he comes at night (foot prints) but he can't be getting much feed, just whatever the girls kick out onto the ground.

We just had a rabid fox attack in our area this week on the news. Makes me extremely nervous. I have 2 small dogs that this large raccoon could easily injure. We are watching and waiting....

Thanks everyone. Will keep you posted.
