I can't be more proud of this little lady.

Lemmy is a 1 year old Sizzle Frizzle, which had her 5 minutes of fame recently after winning this year's highly prestigious molt picture competition in the Frizzle category.

She's still bragging about it to her youngsters...I'd imagine.

A few days ago she hatched the two fertile eggs she had been so determinedly laid on for the last 21 days. She started with 8 or 9 eggs, and I have no idea how on earth they fit under her. I mean, she's the size of 2 baseball balls. I candled them all one week in and removed all but 2 (though some new ones snuck in once in a while).

One egg came from our Easter Egger (Princess Beautiful Face), and the other from Lemmy herself. I'm filled with joy and pride, and again, I'm beyond impressed and proud of her. She's an extremely protective mamma and she wasted no time to show the little once what life is all about. She's a keeper for sure.

Oddly, the Easter Egger baby was born with just one eye (the other one was shut closed. I gently tried to open it without success) and with a missing toe nail on her right middle toe. I named her Pirate (one missing eye and a missing limb hehe). One week later, miraculously, the other eye opened up and she now can see with both (I assume). Hopefully the lack of a toe nail doesn't cause any issues going forward.

Lemmy's biological baby is as odd looking as you'd imagine...and extremely tiny, but ohh so cute. She got her mamma's eyes for sure. But what the little one lacks in size, she/he makes up in personality. Keeping it with the theme, we called her/him Ozzy.

This is our first ever hatch, unplanned at that, but ohh so fun to watch them grow.
Below is a little gallery. One picture of the father, Vedder. Then pictures of Lemmy when she was a few weeks old, while "brooding", and a face shot. Then pictures of Pirate and Ozzy, both just a few hours old at the time.

I really need to get out there with a real camera, but for now, here are some pictures taken with the phone. Better than nothing I suppose. Besides, Lemmy gets so upset as soon as I try to come near her babies. Could not ask for a better mother to these two.
Also, turns out that Ozzy (the black one) is also missing toenails. Since Pirate has a different biological mother, this must be an odd trait from the father...which I'm pretty certain is Vedder (the multi colored gentleman in the above pictures) even though he has all his toes along with very majestic spurs.

One week ago, Pirate laid her first egg. And 3 weeks ago, Ozzy started crowing. So we ended up with one boy and one girl. And with that, this concludes the story of our first "homegrown" chickens. Pirate's biological mother is an Easter egger as I stated earlier, and that gene clearly remains as the egg is green with a hint of blue. And ohh so tiny.
