those of you in the middle of nowhere with internet...

We have HughesNet satellite as neither cable or DSL are available here yet. Expensive (starting @ $60. month + equipment & installation) and just a step up from dialup. They require a 2 year contract. They also have a "fair access policy" limit on how many mb you can use per day (200mb for the basic) and if you go over they slow you down to dial up speed. You can't watch movies or download/upload a lot pictures, video, do gaming, etc. The cable internet allows 250 gb per month ~ much more!

We have just learned that one of our neighbors (about 1/2 mile down the road) is paying $5000. to have the cable line run from the main road to his home~ will take 6 months. As a result, anyone along the path will be able to get cable for the average price. So in about 6 months we will be trashing the HughesNet and getting cable internet!!

I'm going to have to give that man some free eggs and honey!

To me, "in the middle of nowhere" means that DSL and cable are not available. That's the situation we're in, so we have available Hughes Net and Blue Sky. Blue Sky is not as good as Hughes Net. If you download too much one day, Blue Sky shuts down your service for DAYS. If you download too much on Hughes Net, you're only shut down for 24 hours. Of course, it doesn't take a whole lot to download too much. Hughes Net has five levels of service and I believe we pay $70.00 per month for their next to the bottom service. It is very susceptible to weather also.

Dial-up service is so abysmal in our area to be almost pointless in having.

We've got WildBlue, some cheaper that HughesNet, but we are very happy with it. Never had a problem with "going over" the download thingy. From what I understand you have to download a lot of movies and the like to use your time up. We tried the Verizon cell phone thing and what a BAD EXPERIENCE that was.

We're stuck with our local telephone co-op. The slowest DSL- which is so bad they should pay ME- is $75 a month. We can't get anybody else- the co-op is blocking any competition from coming in. Same thing with phone service. The "package" I used to have with AT&T was $99 a month for everything. Here it's $250. Really doesn't make sense- as we are the poorest county in the state. Give the people a break!!

We have a local broadband company who services our area. The package is for unlimited usage with 4 meg download speed and we pay around $55 a month. On good days we get up to 6 meg download speed. If your boyfriend is into online gaming go for at least 3 meg or more minimum. I play World of Warcraft quite frequently and even in the most crowded areas of the game I don't lag to bad with our new internet. Look around for a local satalite or dsl internet. It's usually the lesser known who will give you better service for a cheaper price.

I am not wayyy out in the sticks but because of the age of my house (150+ years) the telephone wires cant handle the data of DSL and cable is not out here... I use Rogers portable internet, not to be confused with the rocket stick (they suck) but the portable modem works great, the neighbor up the road uses his blackberry and tethers his signal off that

wild blue and hughes are the same company .Hughes [They require a 2 year contract. They also have a "fair access policy" limit on how many mb you can use per day (200mb for the basic) ] is very slower than dailup. My husband got for the rv and and daughter came over to stay with him she bought over her lap top and she was downloads songs and going to classes on the net and my hubby was looking for houses on the web and reading his emailing . after 4 days of being on the net they could not go on the web. was very disappointment. so he went down to town and got air card for $60.00 a month thought All tel [ now version]and we still still on unlimited mb on the service.[n version has a limit now on the air card]
we still have it when we using on the road.

we cancel the contract with hughes by changing the credit card.

but at home we use dsl thur a phone line. and it is very good for 4 computers24/7. when the power go off we use the air card again hubby is looking for a modern for the air card hehe.

I have tried At&t out here but no signal ,even tho they have a tower 3 miles down the road, I am not within the 3 mile range ... so I tried cricket pay as you go 50 a month unlimited and not one problem yet, had it for about 4 months now

We have DSL through windstream. Sole reason we got it is because there was a petition started by the mom of a soldier serving in Iraq. She needed DSL in order to be in contact with her son.
If it rains even a little, we lose the DSL. They say there's a bad switch somewhere along the line, but instead of replacing it they just reset it after each rain.
When the DSL goes out, I switch to dial-up and can connect at the blazing speed of 24K.
