Those of you with well water, please read...

If you're lucky it could just be a minor problem with your pump. We had a problem with the bladder on ours and it wasn't expensive to replace.

Okay I'll tell DH to call someone

Oh yes, the ants. They always strike while you are in the shower- probably trying to wash the shampoo out of your hair. They are attracted to the relays. They march right across the contacts, then when the pump kicks in, smash. Eventually too many of them get smooshed up and the contacts no longer make contact. DH has to clean it up and spray bug spray around it.

I woke up one morning and got no water at all. I freaked out that were dried up the well. Turns out it was a minor problem that the plumber fixed in just a few moments. We were getting lower water pressure before that so maybe it's just a minor problem for you as well.

First of all if you are having problems with your well you should call a plumber or a well driller. Realize that both of those guys want to make money and want your business so don't rush in and do whatever they suggest without some thought and lots of questions.

It doesn't sound like pump or tank problems to me. It sounds like not enough water in the well.

I've lived with wells and had to inspect wells as they were being drilled and after the pumps were installed.

Very simple information about wells. This is basic and not meant to cover all the technical aspects.
This is a typical well set up. A well is basically a hole in the ground that gets water in it. You need a way to get the water from the well to wherever you use it. A pump works. To keep the pump from running everytime the water is turned on you have a storage/pressure tank.

The well should have standing water in it. The amount of water a well can hold is determined by the depth of the well and the diameter of the well. The well can only hold a certain amount of water. It is replenished by the water table. The water table has influences how fast the well is replenished and to some degree the water level in the well.

As I mentioned before the pump moves water from the well to the outlet. How fast is determined mainly by the size of the pump. Your water pressure is determined mainly by your pressure tank.

So, if you are running out of water you are pumping your well dry. You are pumping water out of it faster than it is replenished. If this happens on a regular basis you need a well that will hold more water. This can be accomplished by making it deeper.

Hope this helps.

I agree that it sounds like you need a deeper well. Our well not only needed a new pump but needed to be 25 feet deeper when we moved in. Our neighbors have had lots of trouble as well, but instead of drilling deeper they bought big cisterns to hook onto the water lines as a back up and they've been satisfied with that solution.

I wouldn't call a plumber, get a well guy that way if you need some drilling done he can do it for you instead of calling someone else.

THANK YOU for the explanation!!!!!

The big thing we have noticed is that we had none of these problems until it got hot out. I'm guessing more water is evaporating due to the heat plus we're using more for drinking, washing, etc?

We had never had this problem until about a month ago and it happened for the first time on the first 90+ day we had.

If your water pressure is low, check your pressure tank. Water does not come out of the ground pressureized. If you have an older model pressure tank (looks like a hot water heater tank) after awhile the bladder wears out. You also have to ballance the water/air ratio. A simple fix is to put air into the tank. There should be a little valve, like on a tire near the bottom where you can use an air compresser to insert more air. Also check the pressure guage on your water pump.

Our water system consists of a 2500 gallon storage tank, pressure tank, and jet pump to pump water into the house. We dug a well but it does not draw enough water to sustain our house hold so we have to haul it in.

We like the storage tank because you can fill it up and it will last for about 10 days in the summer. Even if you have a well that puts out little water, the well has time to refill and you are not left without water.

plus if your neighbors are on a well also they shouldnt have filled the pool in one day because you are all on the same water table and they could have dropped it but they have a deeper well. I took about 3 days to fill my pop up pool like you describe. plus i didnt want to run my pump continuously.
