I was outside with the horse trainer yesterday afternoon and saw my broody silkie go running out of the barn, squawking like crazy...so I went in and decided to see what was wrong. The rooster was with her, acting protective, not trying to breed her, and the geese weren't near her, so there shouldn't have been anything to upset her. Then, I thought, well, maybe her eggs hatched and a baby chick freaked her out?

So, I have to climb up on a feed barrel, then climb up on a large ice chest on top of the barrel to get to her eggs. She laid them in the top floor of the barn!

As I climb up there, I come eyeball to eyeball with a H-U-G-E snake! I overcome my initial reaction to scream and fall backwards, stay calm, and try and figure out if it's poisonous, or not, because I am about 4 inches away from its mouth! Well within striking distance!

But, as my rational brain took over, I realized that, first of all, it's black. Unless a cottonmouth decided to leave the huge deep creek full of fish, turtles, and frogs to climb all the way up here to eat chicken eggs, I'm probably ok! LOL! No other large black poisonous snakes around.

My next thought was, is it aggressive? He barely noticed me and went back to eating the eggs, so I figured he wasn't. But, when I grabbed him around the back of the head, he wrapped the rest of his body up in the rafters and it took me a while to get him out, without losing my balance.

Once I got him down, I realized how freaking big he was! Well over 6 feet! Then, I had to decide what to do with him. I didn't want to keep him, because we didn't have a tank big enough. I had decided I was going to drive several miles down the road and "rehome" him in a cattle pasture. I hated to do it, because I knew something would probably kill him, and who knows how old he was. The trainer saw me some out with him and asked if he was still alive, and I told her yes. Then she asked if she could have it. We got to talking, and they've had boas, corn snakes, garters, and lots of other reptiles before, and didn't have any at the moment, so I thought it would be a good safe home for him.

He was really docile, maybe because he had just eaten about a dozen almost hatched eggs??? But he didn't seem too upset. I know a lot of people won't understand not killing the snake, but an animal that size, you just have to respect it.

He was beautiful and I'm glad he was in my barn, rather than any of the neighbors! It would have been a shame for someone to kill him.

Just thought I would share. Sorry the pic is blurry, my DD took it and she is terrified of snakes!

I wasn't able to measure him, but would definitely like to! He is a black rat snake. One of the prettiest ones I've seen! I can't wait to see him after he sheds. He has a red and white pattern mixed in with the black. Absolutely gorgeous! You can see the lumps from the eggs in there. I am 5'8" and he was several inches taller than me when I held him out.

From one Shelli to another Shelly, Thank you for not killing that gorgeous snake!

I bet that snake has done away with TONS of rodents over the years!!

I'm glad you didn't kill him. I use to have one that lived in my barn, he got to be about 9 foot. He kept my barn clean of baby birds and mice. I loved him, then he just vanished.

Well...sorry you lost some eggs, but I too am glad that this wasn't another "killed a snake" posts! Too many people are "kill happy" when it comes to snakes, who are sooo beneficial.

I don't know a lot of people who would pick the fella/gal up for a photo op either...lol!

Oh I'm sure he has! I really hated moving him, but we've got kingsnakes here, and if a neighbor saw him...

I did actually have one neighbor get mad at me for not killing him because he wanted to make a belt out of him!

He can find his own snakes...but not on my property!

My kids are on a strict "Do Not Kill" order on the snakes. The are fairly good about figuring out poisonous ones, and they like to play with the smaller ones, but I do have to admit to immediately killing any poisonous ones on my property. I've got kids and grandkids out here and just can't take the chance. You don't see many, and I don't hunt for them. I figure the speckled kingsnakes need that job!

I did find a foot long hognose last week that I rescued from the guineas! All he did was the cobra head. Freaks you out when you first see it! LOL! But I removed him to my flower bed. Lots of stacked rocks and toads there. I hope he stays there permanently!

GOOD FOR YOU! Every creature has it's place in the natural order of the food chain. I try not to kill anything if there's another way to solve the problem. I set a 2 foot corn snake loose in my garden around a lily pond that was overrun with croaking/barking tree frogs (gazillions of them). I don't know whether he reduced the population significantly (it's still too loud for me to hear the tv over their "chorus") but I saw him about 2 years later and he was almost 6 ft. long! Must have been eating well. I have more serious issues with raccoons which are a greater destructive force with those clever little fingers than any snake on earth.

I just dont see the need to kill them unless they are poisonus and a threat to you, your family or livestock! We were at a car show a few years ago and a black snake fell out from under neath a truck that was in the show, all these big bad men were nearly tripping over themselves to run from it, my brother in law walks over, grabs it behind the head, (the snake wrapped around him and peed all over his arm) lol

walked it to the back of the property which bordered a HUGE field and turned it loose. The people at the show had gotten a shovel and wanted to kill it. I just dont understand the witch hunt mentality of killing something because you are either scared of it or dont understand it!

So again Thank you!

Oh wow! I bet he's gorgeous! I haven't seen any corn snakes out here, but I am thrilled with the speckled kings. I think they are one of the prettiest snakes! My husband said I should be glad it wasn't a bull snake. He almost killed himself falling backwards off a shelf in a petshop he was working at, when a lost one struck at him, in the face! I probably would have killed myself and a few chickens in the process. Because, I had an audience...30 chickens all trying to see what I was doing and if it was edible! LOL!

I am happy to say that once I removed the snake, the broody went back on the nest. I hope she ends up with a few babies!
