I got rid of MY OWN dogs because I got tired of them ripping through my wire to get to my chickens. It got to where they were completely unstoppable. The last time was when they broke out of their kennel, ripped in the chicken coop and killed a green egg layer I had. That was the last straw. It wasn't worth the heartache.

They were relocated to a great farm with no chickens.

**Oh, they also killed a preggo cat. The dogs just became blood thirsty.


Having said all this, I would not hesitate to remove or destroy someone else's dog that was destroying what I have worked so hard for. A $3 chicken x 6+ months of feed and care = a really pi$$ed owner when it's killed by someone else's dog.

The SSS method, as a last resort, is exactly what I would do to protect my property.

What if this dog came in your yard where your small child was playing and attacked him or her? I bet you would feel differently. A small child is just as defenseless and just as likely to become prey to a stray, unknown dog.

Silly me I thought the dangly tags on a dogs collor were tolet me know that nay of my chickens that have been attacked by the now deceased dog will not get rabies. And the reason for the owners info is so that I know where to put the carcass of the dog so the responsible owner can dig the hole, not me. I will at this point be patching up my remaining chickens and trying to find any remaining birds that did escape.

If you know your dogs are just waitng for the first opertunity to kill then more power to ya at keeeping your chickens alive, However if they come onto my land I will return them to you and expect you to pay for the damages that your KILLER PETS have caused.

Yes, Maryland does have a law that states any loose dog running(chasing) or injuring any thype of livestock may be shot at the owners descretion. We just had a sheep farmer have 2 killed and 3 more injured by loose dogs, and he was told to shoot and the sheriffs office will try to locate the RESPONSIBLE owner who is responsible for all damages. Let me guess they were only 200 dollar sheep so why should they be shot.

We too have a dog "Pup Pup" She is 1/2 Roc and 1/2 Lab. She has had two litters that we found homes for and then got her fixed. Because she kept trying to get away from them. Since we have gotten our chickens she has gotten really attached to them. She sleeps by the coop at night. and when we let them out, she stays right with them and keeps an eye on them. They even play chase with it other.

Stray dogs is another issue. The problem is so big here in Lee County it made the news and the police are getting involved to help control it.

So we only let our chicken out the coop / pen to free range for 2 hours a day. During that two hours my husband and I stand in the yard with them with a gun and bat handle.

Our neighbor a couple of acres over came and apoligized in advance because he has a full blooded Roc. The Roc keeps breaking his chain. He said if he comes on our property at any time to shoot him dead.

It's not that we are dog haters, but if you read the news article above you'll see that we have to protect our animals and our daughter.

OK, I'm going to make this short and sweet. A genius, no, you aren't. Shallow and Shortsighted? Probably.
Why should I give up the right to free-range my flock, in my own backyard, on my own land, which I pay for, simply so that some bonehead who either doesn't take care of their animals, or doesn't want to keep their "poor dog" confined, can let their dogs run the area, killing other people's animals?! That's a pretty selfish attitude! As far as SSS goes, if I have a roaming dog, in MY backyard, killing MY chickens, be they $3 each, or show chickens, (this is like saying a pedigree is worth more than a mutt as a pet!), I will not hesitate to correct the problem. I would expect anyone else to do the same if I were careless enough to let my dog run wild. If this is such a sore spot, maybe these careless dog owners need to keep THEIR DOGS on THEIR PROPERTY, plain and simple!
