Thoughts about moisture in windows?

Hi there,

Now that the winter is here, sometimes we are getting moisture on our windows. The ceiling is fine and dry. We have three windows in our coop. Two are pictured here. Given the proximity to the birds, we added a bit of plexiglass to prevent a direct draft. The moisture on the window pictured is possibly because we generally keep that window fully closed and only have the other two (one not pictured) open. Would opening the window marked #1 be safe for the birds and will this likely help with the moisture?

Thoughts?

Condensation on the windows is a sign of inadequate ventilation -- which could have serious consequences for your birds' health over the long run. :(

The usual recommendation is 1 square foot of permanent, 24/7/365 ventilation per standard-size chicken with the aim being that the temperature and, most importantly, humidity is the same inside and outside of the coop.

If you provide us with photos of your entire coop inside and out we can help you figure out how to put in more ventilation for draft-free airflow. :)

Definitely need more ventilation!
Is this area under the edge of roof open to inside of coop?

Yes, this would help immensely.

Also....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Thank you! I’m in southern Ontario about an hour and a half north of Toronto. I will update my setting like you suggested. The area you circled isn’t open to the coop unfortunately. I’m going to try to upload more pics. Really appreciate the suggestions and help!
