Thoughts on Draft horses?

Today I met some very nice draft horses and they were very gentle and sweet, is that normal? Are most draft horses sweet? How tall are they on average? Can you ride them? What in your option is the best breed of draft horse? (Pictures would be nice)Oh and what halter size do they usually need? And any additional advice?

I LOVE them! We have a Norwegian Fyord, who is like a mini draft! He is so cute, but super stubborn and strong! I could go all day about him ripping us around and dragging us up hills! They are fantastic!

You can definitely ride draft horses. They are on the taller side of the spectrum ranging from 16hh-19hh depending on the breed. Halter size depends on the head size although most do require draft sized halters

I have always loved draft horses. I rode my drafters. I had two Percheron mares and they each were over six feet high at the withers and weighed well over a ton. You can find sources for draft horse tack on line. it is unlikely you can find anything that will fit at your local saddle shop. I have thought seriously about trying to buy a retired Budweiser Clydesdale but due to my age I reluctantly abandoned that idea. For a drafter meant for riding I think I would go for an athletic Percheron or a Clydesdale. An English Shire would be worth looking into also. There is a drill team in southern California made up of English Shires. They are a sight to behold. I saw them in the Rose Parade one year.

Well the story behind this post is that I've kinda always had a horse phobia and I'm trying to get over it. I think if I meet a lot of really nice really big horses I will get over it, if I ever do get a horse I was thinking it would be a draft.

Yes, but they are expensive and my sister wants to take them more then I do, so I think I'll leave that to her.

My recommendation is to do riding lessons and lease a horse before purchasing one as they are a lot of work.

Maybe find a place that gives lessons and ask if you can help groom their lesson horses.
