For year 9 we have to do a community project, i'm aiming at least two for the year. One of my projects is sponsor a a child and the other is eating ethically so i was thinking of getting school chickens. It would be a great educational project to teach students where food comes from, teach kids responsibility , can possibly be a small donation towards the food tech classes and it's also cruelty free.. I've spoken to my wood tech teacher and he said he would be glad to help build a coop. I know the school would be willing to help me fundraise with bake sales etc. What are your thoughts on this, would it be ok? Do you know of schools that keep chickens...i mean i've heard of hatching programs, do any of you have/had school chickens, how did that go? ty!

That sounds like a wonderful idea, especially with how many people nowadays seem oblivious to how their food is produced. I've heard of certain cities and towns with community gardens that have also started a few community chickens, and I believe they had lots of success. I'm in the U.S., but if my high school had chickens, I think plenty of people would be on board with it. (I'm 12th grade, graduating in a few months.)
I would definitely write up a proposal or a plan with the logistics hammered out, price of bedding, what breed, feed, what it would benefit (with your project/school), and so on. Maybe your school would also try out a small garden, and you could even try composting. It sounds like a wonderful idea, but quite a bit of work, so I'd try to figure out everything on paper first and check with your school administrators. Good luck!
