We keep our buckets so the toggle is about head height. Some hens will reach up and peck food from the hole, but most peck the toggle. We have two different buckets depending on what food is available at the local feed store. One bucket has bigger holes for large pellets and a second bucket with smaller holes for mini pellets. We have found crumble is doable, but just doesn’t work as well as pellets.
We trained our girls by spending some time moving the toggle for them and let them eat what fell on the ground. Waited several minutes and then repeated. It helps if you do this first thing in the morning and remove other food options from them. Chickens are like kids and will eat food that doesn’t require them to work given the opportunity
