Three Days, Three Dead Birds, Looking for Advice

Day 4 of symptoms, Day 1 of treatment.

First, one question. I've been digging on here but keep finding mixed, and old, answers. --- Eggs and Corid: eat them, wait for the bird to purge the treatment, or never again?

UPDATE: One more hen died today, and one looks very ill. No visible signs of parasites or worms in the feces. Some birds had solid, some had diarrhea-esk poop. I began a treatment to the flock of Corid this afternoon along with a good cleaning of the coop.


The sick looking bird has a floppy comb and some missing neck feathers... maybe stress? She was out in the run and went on her own into the coop. I placed her in front of the treated water and she slowly drank for a while. So here's hoping the treatment can help and help her quickly.


The other birds were happy to explore the yard and are still fairly healthy looking.

Amprolium overall is considered very safe. You can eat eggs from chickens on Amprolium, per FARAD 2015, with no egg withdrawal.

The most recent Vet-Gram I can find of 2018 shows Amprolium still on the approved list.

Pull times usually are for the benefit of off label meds so that no residue can be found in the eggs after use. Most meds used in chickens are also used in humans, so unless an individual is extremely sensitive to the med, little risk is involved (other than FDA sanctions if your eggs were somehow challenged and non-approved drug residue found).

So, it should be fine medically. Usually a sick hen isn't laying. The others that are being treated as a preventative should be fine. I personally never eat anything from a sick animal due to the potential for opportunistic bacteria such as eColi and Salmonella.

Treatment Day 2 Update

The birds all made it through the day! In fact, the very sickly hen was even a bit more active this afternoon, going out and scratching around the yard. 2nd dose of Corid and hopeful we are going to make progress.

Day 5 of treatment.

The birds are doing well. My most sickly girl is still showing a floppy comb but has been much more active. Egg production has been way down, and I know that’s a result of the illness (and loss of four birds) but the girls are eating more and seem to be drinking plenty of water.

Question for tonight:
I plan to run the treatment for a full seven days. I’ve seen a few posts about a second round at a half-dose. Is it necessary to wean the birds off, or can I/should I just stop cold? The birds are about six-months-old, and one that is about seven-years-old.

Day 7 of treatment!

The girls seem to be doing well, and very active. The one sickly looking bird is doing better but here comb hasn’t quite bounced back yet.

Today should be their last day of meds and I’m hoping as they continue recovering, they start laying eggs again quickly!
