Oh, cute chicks!
And thanks for the feedback everyone
Okay, so my husband and I candled last night. Out of the 33 that were left about 15 of them were either clear looking, like infertile or they either died at around day 10 or so, based on what I saw when I looked at day by day candling images online. About three of them looked like a big sac of slush moving around the egg. The rest he just took outside and examined. He said there were about 5 that looked perfectly formed, yolk looked fine, and they were positioned fine I don't know. The rest, he said, looked like they were just starting to form feathers. I have no clue!! I'm so sad those perfectly formed ones didn't hatch. He said on those, the membrane looked thick and it was hard to get through. Was that a humidity issue?? I'm very confused. I could see if they all stopped at the same stage, but it seems like on the fertile ones, something went wrong at all stages. So disappointing!
I'm starting over today with a new batch of eggs. It's fully loaded and I just started them (almost exactly one month later after I started the other batch that failed miserably). This batch includes eggs from the same guy I got them from as well as a dozen of mixed eggs from Ebay. I'm not too sure about the ebay eggs. Unfortunately I ordered them and it got REALLY cold. When the mail carrier handed the box to me, I immediately opened it and got the eggs out. They were FREEZING. I wouldn't be suprised to if they were like slushies inside. I only ordered them from one state away, and I live in Alabama, so the freezing cold temps aren't the norm. Oh well...I through them in anyway, but I don't expect anything from them. Also, after some research, I decided to try the dry incubation method this time. fingers crossed!
That's good to know! Hopefully at least a few will hatch
The ebay listing says: flock includes Ameraucana (Aracuna), Bantam (Feather Legged and Standard), Barred Rock, Black Australorp, Black Langshan, Buff Orpington, California White, Copper Maran, Gold Sex Link, Iowa Blue, Production Red, Salmon Favorelle, Silver Gray Dorking, and Welsummer birds.
I got 12 eggs from ebay, so I'm not sure what I got. Most eggs look different, so it should be a good mix. The others are just a mix of different types. The roosters in that flock are Ameraucana, Rhode Island Red and a black rooster from McMurrary hatchery, but he wasn't sure what kind. As you can tell, I'm not really picky I just want all different looking chickens, lol.
If I want 6 chicks, I will set 12, if I want 6 hens, I might even set more eggs.
I want to tell everyone have an 8 week old roo who is so friendly, he is coco maran/brown leghorn mix. I go out to the pen to visit him every day. He has a silky mom that adopted him. he is bigger than her, but he still acts like a baby. I just think in June or so he could start to breed, and he has about 20 lonely hens to chose from.
Just candled the eggs. Ten days in, out of 46 eggs, I removed 3 quitters. As of right now, it looks like we have 43 good eggs!! Wow! I'm so excited. In most of the eggs, you could see the little itty bitty chick moving around There were a few I couldn't tell if they were moving or not, but they had a lot of veins and looked good All but one of the "ebay" eggs was moving. The other might have been, I just couldn't see too great because the egg shell was so dark. Yay!!
Today is day 21 of my 2nd hatch this year and wow, there are chicks everywhere! Some hatched yesterday and some are still hatching now There are so many chicks in the incubator, that I'm having a hard time telling what has/hasn't hatched. I'm a little worried though, because the eggs that are trying to hatch are getting laid/run on by so many chicks. I'll look through the top and just see chicks all over the eggs that are trying to hatch. I REALLY want to try to take the chicks out because they are everywhere and some are starting to peck at the incubator/each other, but I don't want to hurt the other eggs that are in the process of piping and hatching...... I'll try to wait until tomorrow morning I'm so excited though, there are some VERY cute chicks in there!
