I saw a documentary about chickens where a headless chicken lived for quite a few years. (sigh)

How did it eat??​

That would be Mike the Headless Chicken, from Colorado. He's sort of a celebrity in the state. Mike was a Wyandotte rooster. The story is that they were trying to kill him for dinner, missed and only mostly severed the head, leaving enough intact for him to still live, but he had to be force-fed with a syringe. I believe he died of choking from having food put down the wrong hole. He was sort of a circus/sideshow attraction for something like 18 months after losing his head.

um...i may be snapped at here but that mike the headless chicken thing? just sick. why not finish the job instead of letting it live a sideshow life and then death by choking? cruel and sick.
i can't wait to see pics on your three legger. i hope she is viable and the extra limb does not effect her.

Luckily I think most people understand that the celebrity status surrounding Mike is comparable to that surrounding people who microwave puppies. They may generate news and acquire fame, but not in a good way.


I can't see any reason the three legger wouldn't grow up normally. My grandfather once me you used to see a whole lot more of chicks like that. I'll need to remind him of that discussion and ask him why he thought that was . . . maybe because he was surrounded by people who hatched their own instead of going through hatcheries, where I assume those things are usually caught and the chick culled. I'd be interested in hearing from the people in charge of that, just to hear all the weird deformities they come across.

I saw the PBS documentary about chickens... and Mike was on there, and it looked like they mostly cut off his face. GROSS. Poor roo! Anyway... pictures please of your tripod!!!

I remember hearing about Mike the chicken from someone, they thought it was so cool.....it made me furious! Why make the poor Guy suffer?

I hope your little one is going to be okay. Maybe since he ended up in your shipment he will get a fighting chance. Pictures please!
