THREE OFA excellent in one litter

That's awesome. How do you feel about using animals for breeding with/without Championship titles? I only ask because there has been a big debate about this on one of my listserves lately. Many claim professional handling has gotten out of control (e.g. P.H. are in the classes now), and it has made it much more difficult for the O.H. to obtain their own Ch. dogs.

In my breed, the type of Championship discussed depends on how you want to take your breeding program; Hunting vs. Conformation. So it is not a cut and dry decision, and it makes a significant difference.

What are your thoughts?

I like to see titles. Especially if I do not or cannot know a dog personally. Titles, while they do not always guarantee conformational excellence, they do indicate a certain type of temperament, in particular if the dog is titled on both ends.

In the long run, what I look at is the dog, and what is behind it, and not what titles it may or may not have earned.

We require hip only [OFA/OVC/orr PennHip], thyroid, & CERF clearances for CHIC. Cardiac & BAER are optional. Many opt to certify elbows anway, since the dog is already sedated for the hips. Although the breed is relativley 'clean' when speaking of health issues, the predominant burden is epilepsy - followed by significant skin conserns.

We agree. Titles are an indication of the owner's willingness to put forth the effort, and the dog's natural ability to perform. A small study of population genetics teaches us that selecting animals for behavioral traits can fundamentally alter the development of an organism.

ETA: Enjoy your day.

I am going to have a great day. I'm on my way a couple hours north to visit my good friend, who also bred and owns the sire of my last litter. We will have a nice afternoon talking dogs and laughing, playing with puppies, maybe a glass of wine or 3.
