Thrift Store Shopping for bargains

My DD loves the local thrift stores. She gets some cool stuff there and 10 times the amount for her buck. Last week she got 14 shorts and 8 T-Shirts for 2.00.

We always shopped the Salvation Army thrift store in murfreesburo, but they closed it down, said they didn't have enough customers, tried the good will and I can go to ross or marshalls and buy new for what they want. Seems the depression, recession or whatever it is , they have raised their prices sky high, Looked at a straw basket they wanted $6.00 for it to much for me. marrie

5 years ago when I was looking for a house, antique (aka 'junk' shops) were my new best friend. I found a wooden trunk, ugly brown, for $40 I think. Not a huge bargain, but it had good bones and I liked it. I painted it green, antiqued it, and stenciled some columbine and dragon flies on it. Now it sits in my guest/tack room, along with a FREE cheap fiberboard tv cart, and dresser that I painted, antiqued, and stencilled to match. Viola. Matching bedroom set for cheap (and fun personalizing it). I will attempt to go take pictures.

I was raised on thrift store clothes, hand me downs, and church rummage sale clothes and toys.

What I love now is the thrill of the hunt. Of paying $5 for a Talbots blouse or skirt that my co-worker paid $75 for last season.

And when you only pay $2 to $10 for something, when that splat of tomato sauce or salad dressing hits the goods, you don't cry a river!

Huge Goodwill/Thrift shop fan here. I find Alfred Dunner clothes. If you price these at Penney's or Belk they go for 55.00 for a shirt, etc. I have bought beautiful clothes at Goodwill and had many compliments on certain items. I never hesitate to say where I got it and what I paid for it. I'm proud of a good deal.....
I also Yard Sale shop. Some of my best decorative items have come from these. I just bought a Dining room table, 6 chairs, 2 leaves, table pad and buffet made by Henredon Fine Furniture for $150.00. Once I recover the seats the set will look like I paid 1000's.

Ditto and there's another good reason!!!!

Kansaseq, I love how you painted your furniture. Remember when antiquing kits were the rage. I bought four chairs (almost Q. Anne) from a guy selling his mother's dining set. I wish I had bought the two arm chairs, but I only paid $3.50 each about 30 years ago. I painted them a Chinese red with an antiquing kit. I still love them. I just change the cushion fabric and they look so pretty. Old furniture has character. I really like junk stores.
