Our girls are throwing a lot of the straw out of the nesting boxes, and moving the rest aside, so that they very often end up laying their eggs on the hard wood (which means they get cracked more often). The front of the nesting boxes has a little wall 3.5" high, and the boxes are 14" high. I suppose I could make the front wall higher, but they seem determined to throw straw out so I'm not sure that would do the trick. Is this common? Ideas?

Mine did the same thing, fresh clean straw in the nest boxes in the morning and by night it was all over the floor! I have a 3" front to my nests and they throw out the hay, lay on the bare wood and roost on the front board! Or better yet, they lay on the floor in the corner or on a wide windowsill in front of the open window where tehy get kicked off and splatter on the floor! ARGHH!
