Ticks

I saw a grayish pea sized lump on one of my hens a couple of days ago that I'm now realizing was probably a tick. It's now gone, but there is a small bloody scab right by the top of her comb. I thought it was a wart or something, and I was going to keep an eye on it. So I made a mistake not realizing it was a tick and removing. This is puzzling, as I live in a medium sized NW Washington town that typically doesn't have ticks and we have no dogs (but our neighbors do). Anyhow... I have scanned through the forum and read the various things to spray in coops to kill ticks.

What I would like to know is, does diatomaceous earth work on ticks? I just dusted their hen house, chicken coop, and nest boxes. I am wondering if it'll do any good killing the ticks (as it does fleas, ants, etc.).

Interesting. Since we got chickens, we haven't had any ticks around. Used to be that ticks would drop from the trees in the long, dry, hot days of summer.
