Tile floor? Good? Bad?

Thank-you. I've been wondering what all this tiling is about - not just this thread, but elsewhere everyone is talking vinyl. I wondered, why? We have a plywood floor, too, covered with pine shavings. The chicks have been in it 6 weeks, and so far, there has been virtually no cleaning necessary for the floor beneath. (And I'm a clean freak!) All this talk of vinyl and tile flooring had me worrying about what I might be overlooking...

Hi everyone,

I was also thinking tiles for flooring and the walls. My concern is the mites etc and also wood with water not a good mix. Using a good adhesive and grout mix should be good. Well if it's good around my shower should handle a jet wash no and then.

On a side note Where in this forum can i post my coop build please?

I thought about tile myself, as I have a whole pile of it. But opted for pond liner, which is really thick rubber, it was left over too. It cleans up well and the floor of now water proof. I ran it up the walls about 1 foot also.

We tiled the floor of our coop and a 4" up the walls. I used the cheap glazed ceramic tiles, I imagine if yours are porous you will want to seal them. I sealed the grout so it doesn't get super gross. We keep a good layer of wood shavings over it so it's not slippery. It's over plywood and haven't had any problems yet, but it's only been one winter so far. As soon as it warms up I'll do a good spring cleaning to see how well the poo comes off. I say go for it, if you hate it, you can always smash it out and do something else!
Hi, wondering how the tile has held up so far? I see your post is from 2009 so by now you have had plenty of experience and maybe a list of pros and cons. My husband had the idea of just putting the tile over the plywood and no grout, no mortar, just lay the tile down and we plan on putting a lot of pine shavings, maybe 6 inches. The tile is for easy clean up. We’re new to chickens so I was wondering if that is a good idea or not and why? Thanks!

How did this floor clean up?

So, are you going to put down the WonderBoard too? Maybe a nice colorful chicken Mosaic? What color grout? Maybe a nice Saltillo with Delorean Grey grout? Just kidding.

The only drawback I could see coming is if you put it over wood sub floor, sooner or later, moisture is going to get through the grout and deteriorate the wood. Straight over concrete, it should last forever.

I like tile too. Like getting to make your own jigsaw puzzle.
sup man. its been a couple of years and I'm just asking if you think concrete is the only option. not asking in a rude way so sorry if I come off as rude

Why don't you run some tile heating wire underneath and have the ultimate Roman spa heated coop floor??
