So last year we got 5 chicks and I’d like to let me son get 3 more babies. Wife is cool with it but said hell no to me keeping the brooder in the house like last time. Don’t have a garage and the shed smells like gas. So, was thinking about putting the brooder on my deck. I built one out of a rubber maid tote. I cut out a square, framed it with wood and placed wire mesh in between. It’s pretty secure. I could probably cover it with a tarp or make a tent type thing with a flap to keep the wind out. Just a little worried about the heat lamp, keeping it dry and not wanting to start a fire of course. Any thoughts?

Use a heath plate or mama heating pad instead. Danger of fire solved. And what i heard of, you should make absolutely sure the chicks stay dry and draft free at all times. Good luck with them!
