You know, I didn't even think to look around for brothers and sisters. I have been finding a lot of roadkill baby snakes in the past few weeks, but those have been garters. I always thought snakes hatched earlier in the year (like the one time I found a net of just hatched garters, omg it was awesome, so many tiny noodle snakes!).
Yea, definitely glad my Mom, despite her fears, isn't a snake killer. She and I were hiking once around Devils Tower in Wyoming, and I happened to look down on the trail at the instant my boot was hovering over a young rattlesnake. Glad I was leading! I just stepped back and blazed a path around the snake through the grass for her. It was just lazily sunning itself on a rock on the trail, not even bothering to rattle. It wouldn't have been able to bite through my boot, but I am glad I didn't step on it. Mom did have a bad case of the willies, though, while I was lamenting about having left the camera behind! I always seem to not have a camera when I see rattlesnakes. I came across a gigantic one on my own in the badlands, which was sunning itself on a rock at eyeball height and not more than a foot away when I saw it (now THAT made me nervous until I backed up!).
