Hi there,
We had a pullet pass away this morning. We initially found her limp and lethargic, her comb tips dark. After quarantining her, we found her dead a few hours later. Upon autopsy, we found her intestines and ceca covered in small white tumours, and changed in texture, so that some portions were rubbery (looked reminiscent of octopus tentacles!). Healthy portions of the intestines were filled with food that looked like it was accumulating (we wondered if it could pass properly because of the tumours?) Her liver was large but not spotted, and looked surprisingly healthy considering. When we initially cut her open, a large amount of yellow liquid flowed out.
What could this be? Is it likely to pass to our other birds?
Also of note, we used gentian violet spray several months ago on her and our other birds to deter picking (we used the spray on bald spots that may have been due to a mite infestation). Could the gentian violet have caused internal tumours such as these?
We have buried the carcass and not sure who we might have sent it to for an analysis in Ontario?
Thank you for any insights into what could be wrong.
