Assignment 1 (Realistic Animal Drawing): Finding your Shapes

Yes it is basic, but it is also something that is very importent to solidify for anyone wishing to draw animals realistically. It helps to keep the balance of your drawing as you add details. Some beginners dive right in and begin with the details right away. This is NOT a good way to draw. The drawings come out disproportionate with an unnatural posture. Planning is a must for any sort of art, but for drawings of living things it is vital that the creature looks as natural and poised as possible.
For this assignment, please pick out the geometric shapes (triangles, squares, rectangles, etc.) from a photograph and sketch them on a sheet of paper with a pencil. You can either use the picture provided below or choose your own. I recommend that you draw something in the equine (horse) family as they have lots of good, easily distinguished shapes that are large enough to see clearly although if you wish to challenge yourself, by all means, draw a different animal, that's fine. Just choose a nice side view of the animal so you can get all of the shapes of as much of the body as possible. Please don't worry about shading or connecting your lines, that will come later. Also, please don't draw the background unless it impacts the animal in some major way. Just focus on the shapes.
For those of you who are more experienced, please remember that this is a class for all skill levels. If I see that you are already good at this, I will grade you more critically than I would a beginner

I don't really have any examples of painting, so it'll take me a while to post one... D: Anyway, here's my assignment and example:
