Ok so I must be dumb in this area! I would love to keep my silkie rooster, however, and here shows my stupidity, won’t all the eggs be fertilized? I only have 1 egg so far, but check every morning and evening so that is not a problem! I don’t want to crack open an egg and find the beginnings of a baby chick, or worse give eggs to friends and have them find the beginnings!

Yes, if you have a rooster your hens eggs will be fertilized. But it takes about 2-3 days of a hen constantly sitting on an egg for it to start developing. Usually though, hens just lay the egg and leave. And if you have any broody hens (hens sitting in the same spot all day every day and growling when approached) just collect any eggs from under them daily and you'll have no issues!
Most my hens are silkies and they love to go broody, trust me. If I don't want chicks, I just take their eggs away every day. It's quite simple.

You have helped me so much, than

You have helped me so much, as I said I’m new to this and want to keep my silkie! I’ll just keep collecting eggs! Guess it’s time for Marge to change her name to Marc. I did find 2 more eggs this afternoon, I only have 9 hens so not too hard to keep track! Thank for the answers. Great forum!

It’s probably way to early but I have a 4 week old white silkie named Pip any ideas on if Pip is a roo or hen? It almost looks like she has little wattles which makes me a little nervous, any help is appreciated!!
