Fred's Hens :

You can also make the water station a high platform. If the water is up a step to the drinking platform, you'll have much less of what is bothering you. It still isn't perfect, as yes, they'll even poop in their water. Chicks will be chicks.

Yes. Something like this in fact.

the only thing I have found that works (so far) is to hang the feeder and waterer.... I screwed hooks into the top of each container and then hung them from a board across the top of their brooder. The only problem is that I had to go back and seal around the screw with the hot glue gun to keep the refilling water dish filling properly. I also put and old cake pan under the water... they like to stand on the edge and it catches the drips and spills.

I use one of those flat bricks/paver stones. Works great! No more shavings in my water and it's low enough that the bantams can easily get a drink as well. It measures about 12" long X 8" X 2" thick.

Putting the waterer on a brick solved the problem of bedding in the water. I think after a full day yesterday there was only 1 piece of bedding in the water when I cleaned it out.

When our chicks turn 2 weeks old (silkies) I put them on wire and that solves the shavings problem. Just lost 4 to cocci a short while ago and will never go back to shavings. In the grow-out pen, I took all the shavings out and put in play sand. They LOVE it and again...no shavings in the water or feed!!!
