Tis Time for a March 2020 Hatch-a-long!

Thank you!

I am now in lockdown with 6 eggs set to hatch on the 11th ones in the other incubator aren’t until the 17th. Can I ask what humidity does everyone keep at during lock down. I’ve been doing a “dry hatch” so it’s been lower this whole time

I ran my incubators (Brinsea Mini II and Magicfly Janoel 12) around 50% during lock down, although it was extremely difficult to keep the humidity steady at that level in the Janoel. Once I had external pips in the Janoel I stopped fiddling with it. It has dipped as low as around 30% and 6/8 eggs in there have hatched (D20-D21). When the eggs hatch they create some of their own humidity.

Havent had as much luck with the Brinsea at that humidity level, only 2/6 eggs in there have hatched (so far? Maybe? 😕).

How long have you waited before you gave up on your eggs?

I have personally had chicks hatch on days 19-23. However it would be unusual to see that large of a hatch window all in 1 hatch. Usually it's a 12-48 hour hatch window with my average closer to 24 hours.

If I feel something is off with a hatch it usually is. Trust your gut.

well, it's day 20, and I have four out of nine silkies with internal pips! I will probably start having chicks by tomorrow afternoon! As for my Ayam Cemani, I have seven due to hatch, three looking like they are getting ready to pip internally, and only one I think was a late quitter. We shall see though, I've had great fertility on my AC, but not the best hatch rates, plus they like to take their dear sweet time getting out of the shell!

Edited to add the live feed link - The one in the front right is the one I think will hatch first.

Alright, all chicks that are out have made it to the brooder. That's 8 out of 14 viable eggs, or a 57% hatch rate, assuming none of the remaining eggs hatch. 1 of the remaining eggs is internally pipped, but I havent heard it chirp in 24 hours. I may poke a hole in this one to see if it's breathing/what's going on. 5 of the remaining eggs are not even internally pipped, and they aren't moving either. I will check them again tomorrow, but my gut is saying they are late quitters.

57% isn't TOO bad for a first timer?

Oh, and the curled toes marans seems to be figuring his toes out finally.

Congratulations on (maybe) completing your first hatch!! :celebrate I'm glad the little curled toe baby is figuring out his feet as well! Fingers crossed for the last few, you never know!

My first hatch was only about 30% (16hatched out of48) so I think you've done awesome!!

Is it weird that I got so excited when I saw no-skid shelf liner that color coordinated with my incubators and now I don't want to use the "ugly" colors that don't match anymore? :lau
I guess I can use the tan in the Brinsea since it's yellow. lol
