Hello,

So one of my 2 and half year old white leghorn hens has had a dirty bottom for a few days now. This is the worst I've ever seen and it seemed to be bothering her so I put her in an ice cream carton with warm water and Dawn and washed her off. She is very flighty and wouldn't let me do a very good job but got her dried off as best as possible then realized something was hanging from her feathers around the vent. Thought it was just dried poop so went to pull it off and with almost no effort it detached. It was some sort of bluish, pinkish tissue and had a couple drops of blood on it.

She is acting totally normal, eating, and drinking and running around like always. Don't think she has laid for a couple days but can't be sure as we have four other leghorns.

Anyone have any idea what this tissue could be from? And what should I do about it? Like I said, she doesn't like to be messed with.

Thanks for any help.

Could it be the membrane from an egg? Maybe she laid a soft shelled egg that broke and the membrane stuck to her or didn't all come out. Alternatively, maybe she has eaten something she shouldn't and this is part of it coming out the other end. Either might account for her having a dirty bot.

Thanks for your input! Not sure about the membrane - isn't that usually clear rather than pink? This had a texture almost like gelatin but didn't break apart when rolled between your fingers. Never seen anything like it before. Should've taken a picture I suppose.

I was afraid at first it was a prolapse but after seeing pictures online, I am relieved to say it wasn't that.
