Good morning. I live in East Tennessee, Seymour to be exact, which is in between Knoxville and pigeon forge. I got my first 6 chickens about 4 years ago and within a couple of months they were all killed by some predator, dogs we think. After that we made a bigger, better, coop and run and haven't stopped since. We are currently on our 4th Coop and run because we keep expanding due to chicken math! Today I have 22 hens but I have had as many as 40 at one time. Spring is dangerous for me because of all the little chicks available. For a long time, like two years, we would let our girls out every day to free range on our property, 18 acres. We never had any incidents after that first time and then suddenly the hawks started picking them off. It got so bad that now we only let them out if we are outside with them and armed with a shotgun. Occasionally we will have a rooster and although I love to look at them and hear them crow we don't usually keep them for very long because they are so rough on the girls.
I love love collecting different colored eggs and giving eggs away to our friends and family. I work from home so I get to interact with my girls frequently and I have several that will hop right in my lap! I love this website and for years have used it for information. I hope I never live anywhere that I can't have at least a couple of hens.
