to chill or not to chill...

...that is the question. I have heard that fresh eggs, as in warm from the nest box, do not need refrigeration because they are unwashed and retain the layer of ...whatever it is that protects the egg from bacteria. So we go back and forth. We collect leisurely but always end up putting them in the fridge. Thoughts? Info? Urban Legends? what do you think?

It's entirely up to you. If you do not wash them then feel free to leave them out if you want, there is no need to refrigerate. After you wash you need to stick them in the frig. If you feel better with them cold like you are used to from the store there is no harm in that. In some countries the eggs are unwashed and unrefrigerated in stores even.
