To Coop or Not to Coop

So if they are in the secure outdoor pen, I guess we don't need to close the coop door when they go to roost?
Yes. My coop doors are always open to the run. The best thing for me is that I don't have to be up every morning before they are, so they can eat and drink. And chickens tend to wake up in the time of day when predators are still roaming about.

U could always instal an automatic coop door that can be programmed to open and close at certain times. If ur girls are good at putting themselves to bed this may be a good option.
Just have to remember that if someone isn’t in the coop they will have to sleep outside. And with no one there to watch them for several days you may lose some to predators.
But I suppose your pet sitter could check on them daily.

:welcome

I'm another one that has a secure covered run and leave the coop door open all the time. That's worked for me for over 3 years now (but I still don't leave town longer than 1 night just to be sure they're ok).

Best wishes in finding what works for you!
