To heat or not to heat, that is the question.

Its crazy my chickens pick on each other constantly then when they go to roost their best buddies. They put their wings over each other to stay warm & then the next day they hate each other. Guess, what I'm trying to say is chickens will snuggle together to keep warm I've never used heat but then again I don't live in NY. I would not add heat seems the birds stay healthier & acclimatize to their existing environment. My main concern when its cold out is keeping the cold wind off the birds.

Thanks so much. I will probably just order the book. I'm not that fast a reader and I like to take my time. My only real concern is the mix of information presented to us newbies. This is only my third winter. My covered runs are not air tight and last year they just went out when they wanted. I leave the pop hole door open all day.

The weather here is unusually warm. It actually rained today. Very strange. It's just as well. I'm still trying to decide how to keep the waterers fluid.

There are a few "old time" coops in my area still . I wish I could move them to my property.

Thanks again,

Rancher

there is no heat in our chicken coop. we added 10" of wood chips and placed a tarp around the run to keep snow out. our buff orpingtons seem happy as ever!
