I've started to build my coop in Columbus OH. I've contacted all the proper departments and they've all blown me off. So I'm going ahead with my plan to get 6 hens. If I keep it clean and quiet (with in reason) I don't see what the problem would be. As long as I comply with the these rules I should be okay.

Keep it clean
keep it quiet
keep it safe
keep it confined
keep it healthy for all.

Development Standards

3332.040 Agricultural and stable standards.
A. An agricultural use, farm, field crops, garden, greenhouse, nursery and a truck garden may be conducted in any residential district contained in this chapter without restriction as to the operation of incidental vehicles and machinery or restriction as to the incidental sale and marketing of products raised on the premises, provided that:
1. The agricultural use is located on-premises and on a minimum lot area of five (5) acres; and
2. A poultry and livestock building, structure and yard is located on-premises and is located a minimum distance of one hundred (100) feet from a lot or street line; and
3. Poultry and livestock for sale are kept in approved enclosures.
B. A stable may be erected in any residential district contained in this chapter provided that:
1. The stable is located on-premises and on a minimum lot area of five (5) acres; and
2. The stable complies with the appropriate regulations of the Columbus Health Department. (Ord. 1877-02 § 2 (part).)

So my husband says no chicks till I get the permit. So I send a very demanding letter to the guy in charge and he says "there are 2,000 animal cruelty cases and dozens of permit and only two people"

So I offered to drive to the health department and pick up all the paper work. I'm waiting to hear something back....

I wanted to get some hatching eggs but I can't until I know I can have them..... this sucks. I can't wait to move out of the city.

I feel your pain, I live in a Cincinnati suburb. Our rules are even more strict. Says you can't have them unless they are 200' from the property line. My neighbors are pretty easy to get along with. I am going to put up a privacy fence, and not have any roosters. If someone complains, I'll get rid of them. But I am rolling the dice.

Rather than corresponding via email and letters and phone calls, schedule an appointment, be on time and be prepared. Explain what you are wanting, and that you are not planning a commercial poultry farm, but a backyard flock. Show pictures, photos and drawings of your proposed plans and locartion for your coop, pens, etc. Satellite photography as is available on google maps would be super as it will show the whole area including proximity to neighbors. Have a plan for manure and fly control. Ask for help in a friendly manner; do NOT be confrontational. Ask what you need as far as permits and how to go about obtaining them.
