To insulate or not to insulate, that is the question.

I insulated my "brooder room" to keep things more consistent.

Other than that, -20F and never lost a chicken. Keep them dry and draft free with good ventilation. They will do fine.

In fact, the only reason I insulated the brooder room was more for cooling in summer than heat in winter. It is on the south side so it gets heated up in the afternoon.
 
I think Chickens are a lot hardier than we think! We had several negative degree nights last winter in the mountains of NC and my hens did great! My coop is NOT insulated and actually they chose to be outside most those days (day temps in the teens). At that time, we had some turkeys and they chose to roost in the trees during an ice storm we had and I was for sure I would wake up in the morning to frozen turkeys stuck to trees but they managed just fine!
