To varnish or not to varnish?

We are building a new bigger coop and run for our flock of polish a pekin bantams. We want it to make it as weather resistant as possible and thinking of using varnish on it. Is this a good idea? What would you use to prevent rotting?

Yes. Plain wood will get weathered fast. Either paint or varnish is a good idea Plus, it looks better!

Personally I like a good exterior grade paint but that might not go for the decor you are after.

Then again my coop is tin but hidden behind my shop so I don't care what it looks like.

We use varnish once a year on the outside of the coop. Sun and moisture really take its toll on wood.

What advantages does varnish offer in your eyes compared to the advantages of exterior urethane, exterior stain, exterior paint, barn paint, or other lower-maintenance options?

Have you made a pros and cons list for all your options to help figure out what works best for your needs and situation?

Where are you located and how harsh are your weather conditions?

FWIW.

The problem with either varnishes or paint on wood is that it soon drys and begins to flake off. Then one is left with two jobs: clean up the existing old finish and then re-apply the varnish or paint.

I have found that a better alternative is "Danish Oil" which is basically a mixture of an oil, a varnish, and a thinner. The mixture will penetrate into the wood rather than sit on top, as such one does not have the cleanup job and simply reapplys when necessary. The oil is a preserver, the varnish is a protector and the thinner encourages penetration.

One can buy Danish Oil premixed or one can mix it one self (less expensive). Google is your friend, look it up.
