To whoever suggested crushed Cheerios as a treat for baby chicks

Quote:
Oh yes! When I first got chickens, I had some Cheerios that had just gone stale, and I ended up using them to turn my chicks into lap birds. They still come running as adults for cheerios! I'd just recently bought a silkie rooster and used cheerios to establish our 'Let me pet you and you get treats' relationship. He likes it better when I break them in half. I have to sneak them to him while the hens are pecking at the scratch I throw them. They are mean to him and run him off from the scratch. Now whenever I'm in the yard he follows me around looking for them. I swear it's like a puppy looking for a milk bone!

any pasta, yes! cheerios deffinately yes! Also try dried fruits like cherries,
or raisins. I made a special trail mix they love to attack when I hand feed
my flock... But people please, remember they need a balanced diet of starter, or layer feed and older birds need grit in their diet as well.
Isn't this raising chicken hobby fun?!!

i am going to try the cheerios thing, but I am thinking of stringing them onto some thick fishing line, and let them peck on them. should keep them occupied for a while, and should be funny to see them aim and peck.
I’ve done this and they LOVE it! It went so fast that I debate whether or not it’s even worth the time to string them though… Unless I need to give the kids a project to keep them busy, I’ll just save my time and throw the Cheerios in the run without the whole string business.

I would be would be worried about them eating the fishing line. Cheerios might work well in one of those treat balls things though
