I will agree to disagree CM. The raising of pets and the raising of animals for consumption have very different goals. The only thing I will agree with is that good animal husbandry is critical.
I also believe in giving my animals the best life possible. Until I eat them of course. :)

Ralph I'm of the opinion that the leg size is from the selection for weight.I understand that the rapid growth needs more of everything to maximize genetic potential, I don't think free feeding oyster shell increases leg size. I also free feed the oystershell. My Leghorns still look like leghorns.lol

So true...LOL LOL

Sorry about Foghorn. losing a breeder at a year just vacuums. I have done it way too many times.

I am so excited to get my Toad eggs this weekend! Plugging in the incubator today so it is ready for me to set eggs the moment I get home on Sunday! The brooding area is all set up and bedding is bought and waiting.

I am so hoping you get a good hatch rate from them. when I warms up I am making some changes in the "boarding" of the toads. I am going to just leave one rooster with the girls, BUT I am not sure how that will work, they are such a close knit group.

However, the boys bad behavior is taking feathers off the girls. So that must end

How can I get my hands on some Toads. I would love to raise 50-75 of them come spring, I have been looking all over for an alternative to CX, and the only answer I get is "Raise Freedom Rangers" which I have raised but was not impressed by, these Toads seem perfect for my needs.

you get both rangers and cx.. feed them 10-20 min 2x a day and make them free range....keep the smallest cx pullet and breed her to a ranger.. first gen is frogs and 2nd gen is toads
talked about somewhere in this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/896158/first-run-of-cornish-cross-meat-birds-and-super-excited
