Except he is all white! Haha

I was just thinking that about breeding and that I thought I once read that breeding siblings was not a good idea but parent to offspring was fine. What do you think of this and breeding my 4 with each other?

We have little choice but to breed siblings with toads. Hopefully we can get away from that in the future. If my 2 roosters stay alive we might be able to get one of them for you to breed with. That would be an uncle or Dad, in the case of yours an Uncle as I was using the future reigning Bert before he died on the hens.

However, when he stabbed me with the needle, he was nearly purple in the comb, That is not a good sign when exertion does that to them. Next Generation we should have enough of them around the state so we can trade and get uncles and cousins instead of brothers.

Right now we will just say we are "cementing the traits" instead of inbreeding..

I wish you weren't so far away. I would love to try hatching eggs, but because of my first and only time incubating shipped eggs was a total disaster, I don't think I could give a second chance, especially when I paid soooo much for the eggs only to have 0 survivors of any that hatched!!

But I am interested in sustainable meat though. I currently raising cx because of my heartach on the specialty eggs Ipurchased that didn't work out. But I must say, I really can't stand to raise CX anymore, they poop way tooooo much, no matter how pastured they are. So by you utilizing the CX as a starter bird to breed out to one another, frogs, did you ever cross the frogs back to the CX or frog to frog?

I have a Red Broiler, supposed to be slow grower at 12 to 16 wks butcher, and we kept a rooster out of them last year. He is so handsome, and huge, great forager and breeds well, a little clumsy but he gets the job done. I tried crossing him out to few hens, a Partridge Rock, Jersey Giant, Australorp, Cuckoo Marans and a Naked Neck, but there were only 2 suitable chicks for butcher. I have a hen that came from the PR and thinking of crossing her back to daddy. I guess I was trying to make my own toads... LOL but it not working out as well as I had thought. Also, I am going to give it another go, with a few of the same but going to add a couple different ladies: Gold Laced Wyandotte, Silver Penciled Rock and one or 2 other select hens to replace the Cuckoo Marans and Naked Neck since I don't have the CMs anymore and the NN didn't work out well last time. I am hoping to get some better results with the Partridge, Jersey and Austra..... Also crossing fingers for the GLW and SPR!

Feedback?...!

EDITED TO ADD:
I don't know how the genetics work for meat breeding. Like who caries the gene, hen or roo, or combo of both? Like how do they get the cornish cross to all be just first gen all the time, White Rock roo over White cornish hen or otherway around> Ya dig?

You could extend the line by using a 4 or 5 clan system. Wouldn't have to worry about "inbreeding"

@FaerieChicken,hence forth you will Be FC. had to check the spelling way to many times.lol sorry you had such bad luck. I do order off eBay,if one out of 12 hatches I consider it a success. I normally get around 50 to 75% hatch rate. The closer they are the better they hatch. As for as CX,I love them. Pooping, crowing and all the other things people complain about don't bother me. It's a package deal. Lol You want to see poop...get geese. It'll cover EVERYTHING. Nice looking rooster.

Its just that although I have these buggars running all over the place, they still manage to poop mostly on my proch! I have since enclosed the porch, but I had about 40 CX at 1 time, 2 different stages of life, we just finished processing the first batch of 20 or so. Now waiting on the next batch to be ready in a couple more weeks! I hated to do it, but these piggys have to be caged now, because they go eating all the feed, and not leaving any for the rest of the flock. My flocks are co-mingled until I start breeding, then I put the breeders in a pen. But I don't even know how I could even get a CX to breed with itself! I bought some white laced red cornish and some cornish (i assume they are dark cornish but look more like GLW as they have a different comb, and gold lacing in feathers, but bigger) I am hoping to get a few decent hens from then when they grow out and are old enough to breed to my "Nice looking rooster" LOL

It's probably way to late to do anything other than eat the CX. You really have to manage their feed to get them to breeding age. Its a major pain.
I know what you mean about the poop on the porch. I keep the camp candidates free range. That's around 25 to 30 roosters running amok. Yesterday their feed was changed to cracked corn and whatever they can hustle in the yard.Today, they decided to come into the garage looking for something to eat or poop on. They had way more luck pooping. In a week I'm eating chicken.

That is kind of what we are working too as I diversify the toads and more people get them.

Bert and Bertha are kind of the Adam and Eve of the toad world. Everything will spring forth from them.

Before now we were just hanging on to the line. I actually am for the first time in toad history optimistic they will work out...

This is when Fate likes to toy with me though and slam the door on my toes.
