Today I have learned that laying hens have no bones.

...because they appear to be able to fit through a 2" x 4" gap.

Went to let the ladies out this morning. One... two... three... Rooster... two in the garage hospital... hmm, I'm short one. How'd that happen.

Go open the other door, near the nesting box, and darned if the Other Wyandotte isn't behind the 2" x 4" welded wire that I use to keep Rooster from sleeping in the box at night. How she got in there without knocking it down is beyond me. I know Bossy has pushed her way in to lay before, but the wire always ends up flat on the ground after. Rooster seems disinclined to work for anything, so it does keep him out.

So I let her out, and went to take care of Bossy and her feather-growing buddy, thinking that I bet I knew what I was going to get when I got back... sure enough, and egg in the box

I think when replacement time comes around, I'm going all 'dottes.

I have a hen that's in an isolation cage while she heals up from an ugly pecking incident. The cage is in the coop with her chickie sisters. There was a very narrow gap between the wall and this heavy thing. The other day I reached down to pull the cover off to give her food and water only to discover one of the RIR had some how gotten herself squeezed into the 4" space and was on her back looking up at me. I had to do a double take as my brain couldn't quite get around how the heck she ended up like that! I scooted the cage over and got her out. Poor thing walked like an old arthrictic granny. Low and behold, there was an egg laying on the ground, too. She was none the worse for wear by the next day. I moved the cage over so they have plenty of room to get back there. Can't have curiosity killing the chicken!

They can squeeze through some pretty tight places. Mine used to squeeze between the chainlink gate and fence. Fixed now. One got between the recycle bin and the house. I spent hours looking for her in the dark. Looking behind the bins was a last resort desperate ploy.
