today is hatch day found 1 chick dead

came home from work to find 1 chick hatched and died. the mother hen was still on the other 5 eggs . 2 more are starting to hatch as i speak. i wonder if she killed the first chick. i was at work . when i checked this am it was just pipping. the dead chick had the eggshell still stuck to it.

I am sooo sorry.

I would cry if I find this. I know it happens but I have a broody now hatching eggs. It just may have been too weak to make it. Was it eaten or just stuck to the shell and shrink wrapped. May your next be healthy and jumping about. Gloria Jean

I wonder on this. Maybe she was helping it get out and accidently killed it. You never know. Chickens don't have the best aim.

one more hatched this one hatched clean and is under momma. looks like one more egg wants to hatch . the other 3 nothing maybe not fertile .
