Today we will hear a story about comroderie, comedy, and tragedy. In rural Southern California a new phenomenal group is rising from obscurity, singing their way into our hearts.
The "Crowing Barbershop Quartet" features four unlikely friends; cockerels who just didn't get along with eachother are now the biggest new hit out there. Call it a boy band if you like, they prefer to call it a quartet. The real story hear is about their friendship and not their rise to fame.
"We are having so much fun, and the ladies just love us!" Henry boasted in our interview, "I really am the lead singer though", he cackled quietly.
To find the beginning of this journey, we only have to look back a couple of weeks. The four teens were running around, bickering, learning that they had voices. Of course, they all tried to outsing eachother, never in harmony and always at the top of their lungs. Last weekend, everything changed.
Two of the boys were sent away, they were booked into fat camp; a 12 lb program to encourage them to grow. Instead of room mates, they were now neighbors. "I almost miss them, now there's noone for me to play tag with," Ducky told us morosely. Yet despite their separation, or perhaps because of it, they have matured to the point that they will sing together.
"Its great, I have my own food bowl now, and I can practice my crow without being chased down by Henry", Chomper quickly blurted out. His roommate Sparky did not indulge our request for an interview, but sang with the group none the less.
I witnessed their highly acclaimed performance this morning, as the sun started to brighten the horizon. First one, then two, then all together they crowed. Glorious and harmonious, their song went on for a good 10 minutes. The hens fawned over them, welcoming the morning serenade. Only the young'uns didn't seem to appreciate the good old fashioned tunes. "What time is it anyways?" chirped Chicoletta. "I'm young and need my beauty sleep!" The other chicks whistled their approval at this sentiment.
Even the neighbor a few houses down seemed to call for an encore, attempting to join in but couldn't his timing right. "I auditioned to be part of the group, but I just can't make the commute every day", Sean McNugget told us.
Yet sadly, such a great thing is not meant to last. I caught Sparky muttering under his breath something like "Freezer Camp after Fat Camp? Can't we just go home?" as he paced in the run.
When asking "Dave" about it, he told us "In three weeks time we are having a party, and those two boys will be the 'guests of honor', haha!" So it seems that the clock is ticking, and the grill is warming.
Time will tell if the surviving members will continue as a duet team, or if one will have to go on to a solo career. Either way, I'll have a front row seat at every show.

Too bad the quartet has a limited run for their performances. Hopefully at least one of the group will go on to have a long singing career and will serenade the hens with crows and chortles years to come.
