Toddlers are Quackers

I hope she doesn't. We live in a world of drama. Children do not need to be reminded of what they've been through. Family members will constantly remind her of what happened. She will be in therapy for the rest of her life, and never take responsibility for anything. "It isn't my fault I do bad things! My father killed my mother over drugs, and kidnapped me."

Have to agree with you on this.
Her family may be fine who knows. Better be adopted by a family who really wants a child than be raised in a toxic environment or end up in care.

That said - success is not all nurture as opposed to nature. I personally know of 7 young people who were adopted into fabulous caring families as infants. All came from abusive, teen or drug related backgrounds. 3 got involved with hard drugs (2 recently died-both from heroin overdose). #4 has absolutely no sense of social responsibility. #5 is on her own with 2 children and is just 19. The last 2 have turned out generally well.
At least none of them are in jail.

The 3 kids that got involved with drugs came from natural parents who were also involved in drugs. Maybe they were damaged in utero. That Itself should be a crime.

This can be the case with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, I know people that adopted these kids (bless them for they are saints) it has been a tough road for them all, but like you said at least they are not in jail.

my little sister in law was adopted and suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome

I have a cousin that has it. She was not adopted and should have been ( I hope I am not smacked down for saying that) Luckily she found a great guy she married and he has done super to give her stability in her life, he loves her enough to work through her needs. I cannot say enough good about him, and her now.

While it's true that I have no personal experience , it is enlightening to hear about other's experience. My parents were busy, too busy to take on other kids. Dad was on business trips or working on projects, mom was an emergency veterinarian, but at least I got to go with mom on her emergencies pretty regularly since no time to take us kids anywhere else. But my dad's little brothers were into bad stuff. My dad had his father die when he was four. Grandpa was a lineman, and was electrocuted on the job apparently. My one uncle suicided in early 20s and the other was heavily into drugs and has 6? Kids that we know of. I suppose addiction is a hard thing for me to comprehend personally, but I do understand the consequences.
