My son turns 5 next week. My husband, following a family tradition from his side, is taking him on a trip, just the two of them. My son chose Legoland. 8 hour drive each way, 4 day trip, and the longest I've ever been away from my son was when my daughter was being born (left at about 8 PM, saw him the next day at about 11 AM/12 PM.) I'm going to miss him... A lot. And be a complete mess about the prospect of them being in a horrible accident.
My son, seeing me getting sad, puts his hand on my cheek and says "Don't be sad, Mommy. Wherever you are, my love will find you."
Then just before bed, I ask my son if I can hug him. He crawls up in my lap, gives me a tight hug, and whispers (with more gravity than you'd think a 4 year old could muster) "I know you'll miss me, Mommy, but I will be back. I will come back."
Oh this sweet kid.
