Toddlers are Quackers

Friends: "Oh, don't worry about watching them! It's toddler-proofed!"
Bleach, motor oil, bathroom cleaner, sewing scissors/basket, grinder, glass plaques, and prescription drugs all in the "toddler-proofed" room below waist level.
Me: "Naw, I need to keep a good eye on them."
It is amazing how quickly they can get into things. Like my cat. He had to get into a bag where motor oil had leaked out a bit. Then he had to get a bath. Sigh. The whole house and that is where he goes!

I was annoyed by the lack of pull toys. Now I know why they are gone. Crib toys must have strings shorter than 12”. A pull toy has at least a 16” string. I can’t figure why you’d put it in the crib, but that’s another matter. If a toddler is unwatched, they can strangle themselves.
Why aren’t bottles choking hazards? Duckling pulled the nipples out all the time when left alone with a bottle too long. IE, nonstop when her bios had her, and occasionally here when I began putting a water bottle in her crib before I went to bed.
Mom’s best friend is duct tape. It can close a cabinet or cover an outlet when away from home.
:hide Or keep a child still and quit.

My house is Duckling proof. But at about 14 mos she broke the Safety First child lock on the fridge, and one on a cabinet. I think I told them. Not sure.
I never locked the toilet. I did lock the oven. However, I believe common sense must reign. You must keep an eye out. Locks give you extra time. They are more adult proof than child proof.
Duckling has never gotten into much mischief, so a lot of locks were never tested.
Years ago, knob covers had buttons to push in. Now the buttons are gone, and it’s just holes. Duckling figured it out on the first try.
I don’t allow her to touch the DVD player or DVDs. I am alone in not allowing her to touch outlets. This became a terrible fright about two months ago. She was trying to put something in an outlet that fortunately didn’t fit. :ep :th The cover went back in. It was that one favorite outlet in the kitchen we all seem to have.
My back was hurting for a few days, so this past weekend she got to plug in the Christmas lights with me right there.
The cellar will stay locked. That door can be bumped just right, and come open. Granted it opens towards the hall, and there is a three foot deep landing, but accidents happen.
Poison behind the toilet is about to get locked. The cleaners are about seven feet up, lock is on, but not in use. She’s brave enough to climb now, so it’s really time to lock it. Kids try to drink cleaners (and spray it in their faces) as old as seven. Yes, of course older too. But I think you know what I mean.
