Went out to feed the chickens this morning and I was counting 10 instead of 11. I opened the coop door and there was Ginger, my RIR, toes up and stiff! No missing feathers, no wounds, nothing! Just laying on her back with her toes in the air.

She wasnt even quite a year old yet.

Do you think she was egg bound? Or maybe too many roosters having their way? All the other birds are normal and look fine. I just dont know what happened to her. She was up and around and eating yesterday. So I dont get it. She was one of my best layers, and so sweet. Sad......

Hopefully I posted this in the right section. Its not really an emergency since there is nothing I can do.

What do you think happened???????????????

I am sad to hear about the loss of your girl.

When my leghorn got eggbound, that's just how we found her in the bottom of the run. She had been perfectly fine up until that day, then she just got eggbound and died within like a few hours. It didn't even take a whole day.

Bummer. She layed such nice big eggs too. Hopefully the others ones wont have a problem. I just got my new chick order for this year, but they are only a week old. Will be 4th of July before they start producing.

Oh well, I have 6 other girls out there that will hopefully keep going.

Still bummed. It was one of the only chickens we named.

Everybody is doing fine today. Still all acting normal and eating. Must have just been something with Ginger. I'm still bummed. Her boyfriend looks so lonely being the only RIR out there. LOL

Yes too many. 7 girls (now 6) and 4 roos with them. 2 of them will be sent to freezer camp in the next week. We are keeping the other 2 that we want to try breeding this year.

RIP Ginger
