Told I Can't Use PVC glue for chicken waterer...again. HELP!!

meh...here we only glue sewage and drainage pipes, everything else is heat welded, but just because the glue you have in the hardware shop hasn't been approved for potable water, doesn't necessarily mean it's not safe...maybe the manufacturer just didn't think it was worth the expense of having it tested and cleared since it does seem to depend on where you are as to whether anyone is gluing anything other than sewage / drainage pipes.

I have been in contracting and home building fo 40 years. there is nothing wrong with using pvc for yourself or your animals..

You would be amazed at how many homes still have lead pipes.. how bad is that supposed to be..

I have made auto water troughs out of 4" pvc pipe with end caps glued to both ends.. used them for years...

plumers will tell you anything to make you think their job is so complicated that you could not do it.. all you have toknow is that s--t slides downhill...

Just another plumber weighing in, PVC glue is safe for drinking water.....for people at least.
No where does it say it is safe for livestock. One would assume if its safe for people its safe for animals.
However i can tell you from first hand experiance, PVC glue is not safe for fish. the company i work for did a fish display for LLBean store. PVC glue was blamed for the demise of some very nice looking trout.
When in doubt.....check it out.

it was blamed , but was it proven??

copper is not supposed to be good for fish..

maybe they put water and fish in befor the pvc cement was completely cured,,?? or maybe there was cleaning solvent on the pipes.. ?

I know of more than a couple of bait shops who use pvc in their minnow tanks..

You know, there is some value to being old!

I grew up in a period when we didn't have to worry about what might or might not poison us. (Apart from known poisons everyone avoided.)

Today's folks are scared to death of everything! In my opinion, it's a sorry way to live!

I drank water from copper piping soldered together with plain old solder that contained lead. In fact I still do! Today plumbers have to use lead free solder. Of course maybe that's why I'm so numb! I don't know, but I'm certainly not going to worry about it.

Sure nobody wants to poison anything or anybody, unintentionally anyway, but worrying about every little thing isn't healthy either!

Relax, use common sense and have fun! That's what life's all about!

Remember: "Age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm."

fish are very sensitive that way.

you have to use 100% pure silicon for/inside tanks, the anti mold/fungus stuff in standard household silicon is enough to make them very sick or kill them...you have to use buckets which have never had any cleaning products in them for water changes etc...

i have no problem believing that pvc glue could have killed some fish tbh.

me too, we rode bikes without helmets,, took long trips in the car with no seat belts(there weren't any) ,, swam in the river where the cows went to drink, and poop, shared one bottle of soda pop with 3 other friends,, went rafting before we ALL knew how to swim..(never told Mom) and what was a life preserver, anyhow??

Most of us grew up to be adults..
