Bayou, I have to say I'm MOST impressed with the size of the egg for a first egg. It even got me wondering if maybe this isn't the first egg and maybe they ATE the first few....but, they are in a breeder cage with a wire floor, so I'm sure I'd see evidence in the poo bin below if that was the case. Also, when I got home yesterday after work and found the egg, it was quite cold, so it had been there awhile. So, I do think most definitely is was a first eggie, and you're right - to me, it was quite large for a first! The birds are not that large. I have a couple of Exchequer Leghorns from a hatchery, and they are about the same size. Those Exchequers lay very large eggs for their size as well!

You might have found a new good egg producer!,.. people might be interested raising this beautiful bird if it that is the usual size of their eggs,. I guess you will have to wait to see,. I know that's not the only reason to raise rare and heritage animals,. but for small flocks like ours,. we need to have birds that lay nice eggs too,..those eggs help pay for feed

I know you are busy,. but when you get a chance,. could we see more pics of them? I can't find much info on them and the video of them online are poor. Do they have a lot of color sheen to their black?

Are you getting to hear the young roo crow? It must be something to hear,..


BTY.. Hubby keeps hinting that we now have room for more chickens and wouldn't it be great to get some more pretty Plymouth Rocks,..... I just nod and say nothing,.

Bayou, I don't think they're supposed to be really good layers...they are touted as being one of the better Longcrower layers, though, which is why the Tomaru were the ones I've been most interested in.

Yes, the black is majorly (yes, that is a poultry word!) green - that nice, dark, beetle green sheen, all over their feathers, head to toe. Gorgeous! I absolutely can't wait to get some pics of them in the grass free ranging this summer!

I'll try to get more pics of them this weekend. I work during the week, and it's dark when I leave the farm....dark when I get home....hate winter. BLACH!

Sorry Im behind, just now getting around to catching up. Man I would love to do test hatch for ya. Im not sure where Cabelas is, Ive heard people take about going there, havent been there myself, but it would be worth a drive there, its not like Im doing anything better, Im not working so I have time on my hands. Now if I can talk better half into letting me.

Well, I finally was able to capture the cockerel crowing this morning with my phone - I recorded a .wav file, thinking I could load it onto Photobucket or here somehow, but apparently that cannot be done. So, I'll have to actually videotape him crowing, which ain't gonna be pretty, since all I can do that with is my cell phone. But, I will try!

Guess what I got Tuesday evening? TWO eggies! My 2nd pullet has begun to lay! YIPPEE!!!! Interestingly, they are very different shades of brown. One quite light, the other more a medium. Shame on me for not getting a pic of them before I cracked them open to check fertility...BOTH FERTILE!

I'd gotten two think shelled (not soft shelled, just VERY thin shelled) eggs over the weekend, so I was hoping it was #2 pullet, just wasn't completely sure. So - Kev, you're first on the list for tester eggs...are you ready?
