TOMATOES

Mortgage Lifter is my favorite. Mr Stripey and Cherokee Purple have done well for me here in NJ. 3 years ago we got some Rutgers from my grandson's school that were great. The last 2 years purchased commercially they have not done as well.

This year I grew San marzano, cherokee purple, indigo blueberries, tula black, Italian grape, and early bush. I've got some Russian red and oxheart that I put in late and they haven't got any tomatoes yet. Might not get any. The tula black was my favorite. San marzano my least favorite, I won't grow them again. Very finicky and they got end rot when none of the other tomato plants growing with them had anything wrong with them. I gave them more calcium and that did help, but I don't want princess tomato plants.

Calling all tomato lovers! What are your favorite tomato varieties to eat? Why? What climate do you grow them in? Please share! I’m always looking for new varieties to grow! ❤️❤️❤️

Cherry/grape tomatoes are my favorite!
My favorite dish is Tomato Mozzarella Salad I think.
It's just chopped (in half) cherry tomatoes, chopped fresh basil, (about half tomatoes and half basil), cubed mozzarella cheese, balsamic vinegar, some olive oil, regular salt, seasoned salt, garlic powder, dried oregano, and any other seasonings you like.
It's sooo good.

Last year in NY I grew Amish Paste (did ok), Berkeley Tie Dye (excellent), Green Zebra (grew well but didn’t love them), Cherokee Purple (loved them), Paul Robeson (tasted great but didn’t grow well), Nebraska Wedding (thought they would be my fave but I did not like them), Longkeeper (kept well but tasted like cardboard), and Yellow and Chocolate Pear which were both very good. Also had some volunteer orange cherry that I must’ve gotten from my previous years farmers market tomatoes from the compost. They were excellent also!

Want to try 2 more new ones!

My favorite tomatoes are Roma. But I am also very fond of cherry/grape tomatoes. I also grow some Early Girl and Big Boy tomatoes for slicing. Last summer we had a terrible drought and all my tomato plants died. This year I will be planting some tomato plants close to the house where I can water them with a garden hose.

:( My main garden does not have running water.

add dried/stale bread cubes, red onion, a bit of cucumber - "panzanella". Great way to strewtch the last half serving and the liquid at the bottom of the bowl.

Any plum tomato will do, but preferably, Roma or San Marzano. I've not tried growing them in the new location yet, but they did well in raised beds in (Austin-area) Texas (till the leaf footed bugs arrived) and in Tampa, FL. The current soil wont support them, working on improving it.

and any grape tomato that isn't a "patio" variety (skins too thick).

NO BEEFSTEAKs

and no purple/black - I may have the gene. They taste "odd" to me.
