Tomatoes are great my Girls love them. First they eat the seeds then the flesh.
The tomato is not toxic but the plant parts are. "TOMATO (Lycospersicon evculentum); vines. suckers: gastrointestinal tract affected by solingen glycoalkaloids" And they would have to eat a ton of the plant for them to get sick.
Hope this helps.

Mine chase each other all over the yard when one gets a tomato hornworm. And they adore all tomatoes especially the cherry ones. I made the mistake of giving them tomatoes straight from the vine and thus taught them to help themselves. A fence will go in place next year!

Holy mackerel, I had no idea so many plants were toxic to chickens...it seems like every plant that exists must be on that list!

Question: When I free-range my chickens, do I need to try to pay attention to what they eat, or will they naturally not eat things that are not good for them?

I'm a brand-new chicken keeper, and I went out into the fields yesterday to get some greens and weed seeds, apples, pears, crabapples, figs, etc to put into the coop for my Guineas and chickens, and now I'm wondering whether that's such a good idea. The problem, though, is that I don't know what MOST of the wild plants I picked seeds from are even called, so I can't even look them up!

I have been trying my pullets on all kinds of treats in an attempt to get them more tame.

They loved the tomatoes which I cut in half son they could find the seeds. Only problem was that they had very runny droppings the next day. So much so that I thought my Marans was bleeding!!!

But they were bright eyed and active, and it soon stopped!
