My friend says she read that you can give tonic water to chickens that have been infested with mites and this will bring their platelets back up due to blood loss. She has searched for the article and can't find it.Its not safe for for humans who gave that problem.Anyone able to give me any info on this?

Feed them protein. If you don't already, feed them a complete poultry feed with 18 - 20% protein with oyster shell in a separate container for layers. Offer some Rooster Booster or Poultry nutri-drench 3x a week to help build them back up.

Actually, it (drinking quinine or tonic water) can reduce their platelets. There has been documentation of people suffering leg cramps who have drank it, and then suffered from thrombocytopenia or low platelets. Do not feed it to your chickens.

Giving NutriDrench and a balanced diet will help them build up red blood cells to recover from the anemia associated with mites.

X2! Looks like your friend might have it backward. I’m also trying to visualize getting a chicken to drink tonic water...

I didn't know the answer, but it was as I suspected. I applied the, "If it sounds crazy, don't do it without serious and plentiful evidence in favor" test to the idea.
