Too Attached...

I've been building a coop with my dad. It's not all that easy keeping chickens in the house, at least not for me...they poop all over my hardwood floors and I slip in it at 3am. They sit at my front door looking out like pet dogs, so people must think we're nuts. They even want to sleep in bed with me...it's so adorable but it's so unsanitary!!!

There are plenty of predator proof coops to get ideas from on this site. Diapers or not, I can't imagine 22 chickens living inside my house. I don't think they'd like it much, and I'm sure your parents aren't going to like it either.

Wow!!! 22 chickens in your house?!?! I am impressed. I can barely handle one convalescing chicken in my basement who gets cleaned everyday. You have some... dedication?

Still, it's not healthy for any of you. Chickens and humans can pass diseases and parasites to one another in such close proximity. That many chickens need space to roam, ground to scratch at, good ventilation. I recommend building a very tough coop and then adding a run completely enclosed in hardware cloth. You don't have to lose chickens to predation. There are great plans everywhere for strong coops. There are also pre-made coops at most of your local agricultural stores. (I have to say that the ones I've seen are lovely, but usually pretty pricey.)

It's nice you care so much about your birds, but they really do best if they are in their natural habitat. Good luck!

I'm disturbed.. The amount of dust must be insane.

Get yourself a plan and get a coop built before they get too big, which they will do very soon. No clue on how old they are, but at 6-7 weeks they're huge and can easily take up alot of space... If they're cramped together they will end up pecking each over, possibly to death.... So....

A coop attached to a barn isn't a bad idea at all.. So long as it's done right, it won't be a problem. Just need to button it up with hardware cloth and whatnot.
