Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

a mal- position can hatch on their own, just remember the first pip is both internal and external so it could take longer than a chick that you do not see the internal pip just the external one. there is a whole thread on here about hands on hatching... some folks will help and do an assisted hatch and others feel that if it can not get out on its own then it is not strong enough to be in their flock. every person has to decide what their comfort level is. I feel that if it made it that far I created a artificial environment by placing the egg in the incubator so I will help to an extent. best of luck and do not rush it

Thanks I just read that article you’re referring to. I’ll keep an eye on it and only assist if it struggles through tomorrow. Shoot, now I’m wondering if I should have flipped it...

Have another little pipper, but it was upside down. Very quickly flipped it the other way. Anyone know how it’s sitting in there and if it will need help since it was positioned wrong?

I always lay mine flat in the incubator but I have had chicks pip on the wrong end before and they managed to hatch without assistance. Since this little one pipped through the shell and the membrane without hitting a blood vessel it is past the first big hurdle when hatching upsidedown, so should be just fine but I would just keep an eye on it if the others finish hatching and it's still struggling, may need a little assist but fingers crossed it will be fine!

these are the times to sped LOTS of time here reading and writing, so that your hands are busy and not IN the incubator... just saying.
Ok good advice but I do not always manage to take it myself. I find my best deterant to playing with the incubator is chores or work...

I agree. I would wait a bit longer then help. I had to hatch one like this the other day. I probably waited too long, but it survived and is happy and healthy.

Ok ok, I’ll go play with the big chimkens. Have two that come up for hugs and cuddles and will keep the mind off the incubator.

How to get them outside in their temporary run... She/they wont go past the door. Bunch of chickens!

Which breed was this egg? I candle my Foxfire eggs tomorrow, day 7. Hoping I don't loose too many more. I'm already down to 27/36.

In general I incubate and hatch shipped eggs upright. Just like you're doing. But this round I'm doing them on their side. Because they traveled exceptionally well. Otherwise it would have been upright hatching again.

This egg wasn’t a shipped egg was gifted from my boss, who also gave me the 2 month old silkie bantam cross eggs. This one that’s upside down is most likely the comet/unknown bantam cross.

Were the shipped eggs that you had to pull clears or dead starts/blood rings? I did have about 5 or 6 go that route. But once I pulled those out in the beginning, no other shipped eggs died.

So glad I ran into this site before these batches. probably would have lost more than normal again.

Yup, you guessed it. Of the 9 eggs that were pulled 7 didn't have any development (infertile or scrambled) and 2 early quitters.

I woke up earlier today to an internal pip in my oldest egg (19 days today)! Took a quick picture and upped the humidity to 60-65%.

I added a safety hole to the internally pipped egg about an hour ago. It's been rocking like it's trying to make an external pip with no progress and I did notice some pretty thick shells when I was cracking open eggs to look for bullseyes. The shell definitely did feel a little thick when I made the safety hole so I'm happy with this decision. I'm guessing there is a good chance this baby didn't really need it but it gives me peace of mind. I don't worry too much about adding safety holes as they haven't seemed to adversely affect my hatches and have saved a lot of shipped egg babies that just weren't strong enough to pip externally. I've developed a bad habit of just routinely doing it now with eggs I'm hatching in small batches even if they are my own eggs and not shipped.

I said I was through.

I even cleaned, sanitized and packed away the Incubators until spring when my own eggs start arriving.

Post office called this morning.

I had a box of live eggs waiting for pickup.

HUH!!!

So now I am joining in and expect a lockdown on the 17th with hatch day around the 20th.

And another farm I had ordered from contacted me, they will be reshipping my failed eggs as every shipment for that month was made up of clears. So they will be reshipping my order. Which means I will be hatching in March as they have me down to ship third week of February.

IT IS NOT MY FAULT I fell off the wagon!!!!!!!!!
